Beginning as early as April 20th: temporary closures for salvage operations

Heads up! The OSU Research Forest will begin salvage harvest operations as early as Monday, April 20. Exact start date may vary and depends on contractor availability.

What: We will be salvaging wind thrown and downed trees resulting from recent winter windstorms.

When: April–June 2026 (approximate).

Where & what to expect: Work will take place at various locations across the McDonald and Dunn Forests. We will implement temporary, roving closures at operation sites.

  • Roads and trail segments may be closed for up to two weeks at a time.

  • Closure locations will change as work progresses.

  • Closure signs and barricades will be posted on site.

  • Closed roads and trails will be shown in real time on the interactive harvest web map. Please check this frequently as this will be the best way to see where closures are occurring!

  • Whenever possible, closure points will be set up to allow visitors to re-route or detour without having to back-track.

Why: These operations help clear roads and access routes, address safety hazards from downed trees, and recover some of the value of trees damaged by recent storm events.

Note that not all trees downed by the windstorm will be salvaged.  Many across the Forest will be retained as down woody debris for habitat value and long-term nutrient cycling, especially in previously planted units, in stands prioritized for late successional forest values, and in areas distant from roads.

How: Salvage operations will use ground based forestry equipment.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as this work takes place!
