Ecological forestry on the McDonald Research Forest: with forestry interns Abby and Sawyer!

When: Saturday, February 21st at 12:30pm

Come out in the woods with OSU Research Forest interns Abby and Sawyer as they discuss their work designing and implementing some interesting forestry projects with the objective of creating diverse forest conditions! In this "Hike with a Forester", we'll explore two very different forestry projects: one to create complex conifer-dominated stand structure (in a stand that has no less than four age classes of Douglas-fir!), and another in which conifers will be removed to let Pacific madrone and Oregon white oak dominate a dry hillside once again.

Attendees will definitely see some large Pacific madrone, among the largest present on the Research Forest system. A bonus side visit will take a look at habitat created for purple martins and other birds that like wide open spaces (with some good solid structure left behind, or "retained" as a forester might put it).

RSVP: Please RSVP to mark.swanson@oregonstate.edu. Limited to first 20 people to RSVP.

Location: Meet at 12:30 PM at OSU Research Forest office

What to expect: Hike will total 1.5 miles in length, gaining and descending 400 feet of elevation. Please wear close-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
