Summer herbicide spray starting as early as July 20th
The OSU Research Forests plan to apply forestry herbicides to vegetation within selected McDonald-Dunn harvest units as early as Monday, July 20. The exact dates are dependent on weather conditions and contractor availability.
Herbicides will be applied to the selected treatment units on the McDonald and Dunn Forests using backpack sprayers (no aerial application). Herbicides will be applied to target vegetation only, and will not be applied to road or trail surfaces.
During the application, staff will be at roads and official trails leading into herbicide treatment areas to prevent accidental entry by visitors.
Signs will be posted at entry points to each treatment area and will include date of application, herbicide used, and public re-entry information. Signs will remain in place for one week.
Herbicides are used in the Research Forests to maintain infrastructure, prepare sites for planting, and reduce the abundance of invasive plant species. All herbicide applications are conducted in compliance with State and Federal regulations and with product labels and under a licensed pesticide applicator's supervision.
