In 1996 Anne Bennett Rogers, Cutural Resources Manager, OSU Research Forests, conducted the first cultural resources inventory of the Oberteuffer Forest. The location of the Forest makes it an interesting subject for historic exploration. The Forest falls along the boundary established by Tuekakas (or Old Chief Joseph) separating the Nez Perce and Cayuse tribes. Both tribes were members of the plateau culture. Characterized by seasonal rounds, the members of the plateau culture moved between winter and summer villages. These annual journeys put them in close proximity to the bison, fish and other seasonally available resources that comprised their diets. Numerous arrowheads found on the property along with its suitable landscape would indicate that the Forest was a seasonally utilized site.
